Her 39-year-old son has an ileostomy and would sometimes pull at his ostomy pouch or accidentally puncture it, ultimately resulting in leaks and messes that extended beyond his clothing and into the home. After repeatedly dealing with the consequences, she began looking for a way to protect the pouch while still allowing her son to maintain the necessary connection to his stoma. That experience inspired her to develop the Reprieve No Pull Ostomy Belt.
The Reprieve No Pull Ostomy Belt is a wearable support garment designed to help prevent accidental or intentional interference with an ostomy pouch. A wide abdominal section made from soft, breathable, flexible and sensory-friendly material surrounds the user’s midsection, while a protective, water-resistant compartment covers the ostomy pouch. The covered design helps limit direct access to the pouch while allowing it to remain connected to the stoma. A caregiver-accessible opening can be secured with a latch, hook-and-loop fastener and allow authorized caregivers to inspect, empty or replace the pouch when necessary.
The invention was developed with individuals who may have difficulty understanding or resisting the urge to pull at medical equipment in mind. It may benefit people with developmental disabilities, autism, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, traumatic brain injuries and other cognitive or sensory needs, as well as the family members and caregivers who support them.
