Robert Vargas has announced his next public art installation, A Double-Sided Sports Monument Celebrating Los Angeles, the Chargers, and the City of Torrance.
TORRANCE, CA, UNITED STATES, August 17, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Celebrated artist Robert Vargas is creating another landmark mural in the South Bay, this time on the North side of the DoubleTree by Hilton in Torrance in collaboration with the Los Angeles Chargers. A full-color sports mural titled “The Storm is Coming”. The monumental artwork will be painted freehand across the entire length of the north side of the DoubleTree by Hilton Torrance Hotel. The piece will feature a dynamic depiction of Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert and safety Derwin James Jr.
The mural comes as a follow-up to his now iconic “Samurai of the Diamond” mural on the hotel’s south wall earlier this year, Vargas returns to the DoubleTree by Hilton Torrance Hotel to turn the building into a dual-sided sports landmark along the Hawthorne Boulevard corridor. This second piece firmly establishes the Hawthorne Boulevard corridor as a landmark destination for public art. Vargas explicitly noted that his vision is to turn this specific area into a world-class cultural destination for the arts.
The project brings together Vargas’s celebrated large-scale public art with the energy and spirit of Los Angeles football. Positioned at a prominent location in Torrance, the mural is designed to serve as a lasting piece of public art and a destination for residents, visitors, sports fans, and the broader Los Angeles community.
Artist Robert Vargas and Torrance city officials will be holding a press conference to introduce the mural to the city at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Torrance (21333 Hawthorne Blvd, Torrance, CA 9050) at 10am PST on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, and muralist Robert Vargas will be painting the large mural every day that will cover the entirety of the hotel’s outer North wall, with plans to unveil the finished mural titled “The Storm is Coming” on September 8, 2026,
The official unveiling of the completed mural is scheduled for September 8, 2026, just days before the Los Angeles Chargers’ home opener on September 13. The timing will celebrate the excitement of the upcoming football season while introducing a new cultural landmark to the South Bay and the city of Torrance.
“Sports have a unique power to bridge cultures, unite communities, and bring people from all different backgrounds together,” said Robert Vargas. “With ‘The Storm is Coming,’ I want to capture that electric energy and local pride, celebrating the Chargers and giving the South Bay a new visual anchor that inspires everyone who sees it”.
Vargas, who was recently presented with the key to the city and named an honorary cultural ambassador for Torrance, is famous for painting his massive, multi-story works entirely by hand without the use of grids, projections, or outlines. The upcoming performance piece will allow community members and visitors to witness the mural come to life day by day. Like his previous works, the Justin Herbert mural will serve as a celebration of the city’s growing status as a cultural destination in the South Bay.
