Its MCP time tracking server publishes 120 tools across 21 areas of the product, and where other time tracking MCP servers let an assistant write a time entry, WebWork’s runs the workspace: approving timesheets, assigning tasks, creating projects, deciding leave requests and changing members.

The Model Context Protocol is an open standard that allows an AI assistant to operate software it did not ship with. Before it existed, each connection had to be built by hand for each assistant separately. A product now describes its capabilities once, and every assistant that supports the protocol can use them. WebWork wrote that description for its entire platform, so the same connection works in Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Cursor, Windsurf and clients that adopt the protocol later. Nothing installs in the AI app or on team computers, and no record IDs are required, because the assistant resolves the workspace, the person and the project by name.

In Claude time tracking, the administrative side is where the difference shows: approving a timesheet with the reason attached, inviting a member at a specific role, assigning someone to a shift, setting a contract rate.

Asking which timesheets are pending returns the list with hours and activity descriptions attached, and approving the ones that check out happens in the same request, with rejections carrying the reason back to the employee. Reports on tracked hours, activity levels, attendance, the daily timeline, real-time status, GPS and tasks are returned directly in the conversation. Projects can be created, updated and archived, tasks assigned and commented on, clients given read access to their own projects, leave requests decided, teams built, job titles and contract rates set, expenses recorded and screenshots retrieved for review.

The practical effect is that the answer arrives where the decision is being made. An assistant can compare tracked hours against a project estimate, or check whether a team’s activity has changed from the previous week, and return the result in a sentence. There is also nothing new for a team to learn, because the interface is the assistant they already use.

Granting an AI assistant write access to workforce data raises an obvious question, and the answer is that the connector holds no access of its own. It operates at the signed-in user’s member type permissions and no higher, so a tool that role cannot use returns a permission error instead of a result. Only a Workspace Owner or Executive Manager with a verified email address can connect it. Read, write and administrative access is granted at sign-in, AI clients allow tools to be approved individually, deletions and archiving require explicit confirmation, and actions that send real email, such as member invitations and leave approvals, are flagged first. WebWork keeps no separate copy of workspace data, and disconnecting ends access immediately. Once an answer reaches the assistant, it falls under the customer’s agreement with that provider, as any shared document would.

Setup is self-serve. OAuth credentials are created in WebWork settings and entered in the AI client, with no code and no support request. The MCP server is included on every WebWork plan, though shifts, custom fields and expenses require Plus, and a small number of capabilities require Premium.
