Catastrophic flooding leaves hundreds dead and thousands missing, including foreign tourists and Americans

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Aug. 27, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Convoy of Hope is responding to the catastrophic mudslide and flash flooding along the border of Nepal and China that has left communities devastated, with at least 360 confirmed dead and thousands more missing as search and rescue efforts continue.

The landslide was the result of a glacial collapse that registered as a 5.2-magnitude earthquake. The mudslide forced a powerful surge of water downstream and devastating communities in its path. The sudden flooding tore through villages, roads, bridges and other critical infrastructure, leaving families displaced and survivors facing an uncertain road ahead.

Hundreds of people remain unaccounted for, including at least 341 foreign tourists from around the world, according to Nepal’s Tourism Board. Among the missing foreign nationals are dozens of Americans.

The powerful flooding has also damaged roads and infrastructure, making it difficult for emergency responders to reach some of the hardest-hit communities. Rescue efforts are underway on both sides of the border as officials continue searching for survivors.
