Mode.Inc, a consumer technology platform that acquires and scales consumer apps, today announced BizBuyData.com, a data licensing program that pays eligible organizations for records they already hold. Businesses can license historical operational records, such as internal messages, emails and project histories, to AI labs training workplace agents.
Mode has built its consumer business around helping people earn and save money through everyday mobile activity. BizBuyData.com extends that approach to organizations, giving them a way to participate in the AI economy.
Early AI systems learned largely from the public internet. Developers are now building agents that can coordinate projects, resolve problems across teams and respond to customer requests. To train them, AI labs need examples of how people work through problems and make decisions over time. Those examples typically remain inside organizations, rather than on the public internet, making licensing a way for AI labs to access them.
Mode first recognized the opportunity when it explored licensing its own operating records and those of the companies it has acquired. Other vendors would not let it audit how personal information was removed, so Mode built its own tools to strip names, sensitive content, and other PII. Now, Mode is rolling out the tools to other businesses. Organizations keep their original records and systems, approve which systems and date ranges are included before any export, and never hand over passwords.
“It’s a hard market to raise capital in, and many businesses are sitting on operating data they never thought could generate revenue,” said Dan Novaes, co-founder and CEO of Mode. “We discovered that opportunity with our own operations data. We want to help other organizations earn from work they’ve already done and put that money back into their business, without taking on debt or giving up equity.”
Businesses with at least 20 full-time U.S. office employees using digital workplace tools are eligible. Because AI labs are prioritizing legal and accounting data, the threshold is lower for those firms: 10 employees for accounting firms and six for law firms.
Interested organizations receive an initial estimate. A 14-day, nonbinding letter of intent holds that estimate while Mode assesses the data, with one seven-day extension available at Mode’s request. Once an organization accepts the final offer, Mode collects and de-identifies the data over 15 to 30 days before it is shared for AI training. Payment varies based on the amount and type of eligible data and is expected within approximately 60 days.
Mode is also introducing a referral program. Qualifying referrers can earn the greater of $50,000 or 6% of a participating organization’s payment once the licensing transaction is complete.
