Carnegie Learning, a leader in K-12 education solutions, today announced that it has acquired Ethiqly from Owl Ventures, the leading venture capital firm focused on EdTech, and from Ethiqly management.
Building on Carnegie Learning’s flagship literacy solution, Lenses on Literature®, which engages students in grades 6-12 with complex texts and grade-level tasks, Ethiqly will support writing development while keeping teachers and students firmly at the center of the learning experience.
Ethiqly is an AI-powered writing platform developed in collaboration with global design and innovation firm IDEO. Founded by CEO Clinton Grusd, Jared Grusd, and Brandon Grusd, Ethiqly supports students from brainstorming and drafting through revision. It also gives educators insight into students’ thinking and growth, enabling more effective feedback and consistent evaluation. This approach reflects Carnegie Learning’s belief that AI should help students become better writers and deeper thinkers, not do the writing and thinking for them.
“Writing is how students learn to think critically, wrestle with complex ideas, and develop a voice of their own,” said Barry Malkin, CEO of Carnegie Learning. “That work matters even more in the age of AI. Technology should not do the thinking for students; it should help them become stronger, more independent thinkers. That is what drew us to Ethiqly.”
“Ethiqly was built on a conviction we shared from the start – AI should make students better writers, not do the writing for them,” said Tory Patterson, Co-Founder and Managing Director at Owl Ventures. “Carnegie Learning brings the instructional rigor and classroom reach to deliver on that at scale. We’re thrilled to see these teams come together.”
“From the beginning, we believed technology should strengthen learning, not shortcut it,” said Clinton Grusd, Co-Founder and CEO of Ethiqly. “Carnegie Learning shared that vision from our very first conversations. Together, we can bring that philosophy to classrooms across the country at a scale we could never achieve independently.”
By combining Carnegie Learning’s decades of research-based instructional expertise with Ethiqly’s technology, the companies aim to create a model for AI-supported writing instruction that gives teachers better insight into student learning and helps students become more thoughtful, confident writers.
